Refinery Gas Analysis (RGA)

Refinery gas analysis is a commonly used gas chromatography based test method to measure gases produced by pilot plants or from crude oil refining including stack emission, flame and reformate streams. Although the composition of the gases vary, they typically contain C1 to C5 paraffins, C6+ paraffins, C2-C5 olefins and permanent/inert gases. All of which can be measured using our refinery gas analyzers.
Our refinery gas analyzers (RGA) utilize a gas chromatograph configured with three individual channels that work together simultaneously. One channel equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID) to measure the C1 to C6, C6+ hydrocarbon species. One equipped with a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) to measure the permanent/inert gases (CO, CO2, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen) and H2S. And, one equipped with a thermal conductivity but using nitrogen carrier gas to measure hydrogen if greater sensitivity is required. The RGA system can be configured to analyze gaseous and/or ‘pressurized’ gases. Analysis results from each of the individual channels is processed to produce a single comprehensive report using special software included with the system.
Although refinery gas analysis cycle times can take as long as 20 minutes or more Separation Systems can configure ‘Fast RGA’ systems with cycle times as little as 6-8 minutes.
